Men’s Hair Care 101
Men’s Hair Care 101
As a guy, you enjoy having an attractive head of hair. However, you may not be into hair care as much as a woman, but it still ranks in importance. You can keep your hair looking its best with these men’s hair care pointers from A-Z Hair Restoration.
Shampoo by Hair Type
You’re tempted to pick up any bargain brand shampoo and save money, but it’s not always best. If you’re a little pickier, maybe you buy one with added conditioner for a few cents more. Remember that you get what you pay for, and those bargain shampoos could hurt your hair.
Instead, choose a shampoo that’s best for your hair type and scalp. Buy the best quality that fits your budget. If you don’t care for the floral and fruity scents, you can buy shampoos formulated with masculine scents or an unscented variety.
1. Fine Hair
If you have fine hair, it’s light and can easily be weighed down by oily products. Find a shampoo that contains volumizers that will lift your fine locks and give them body.
2. Thinning Hair
Most guys who visit our hair restoration clinic have thinning hair and battle hair loss. If this is the case, you need a shampoo that temporarily increases your hair strand. It gives the illusion that your hair is thicker.
3. Curly Hair
Are you tired of fighting frizz in your curly hair? It would help if you had a shampoo with frizz reduction to shape and control the curls. Shampoo and conditioner that adds moisture to hair will also help control frizz and define curls. Haircare for men with curly hair doesn’t need to be complicated, there are many options out there.
Shampoo by Scalp Type
Whether you have a full mane or are completely bald, your scalp needs daily care. Your scalp type will usually follow your skin type, normal, dry, or oily. Most quality shampoos will list the hair and scalp type to pick which is best for you.
1. Normal
Many of the men we see for hair transplant surgery don’t have a dry or oily scalp problem. You can use the shampoo marked for your hair type and usually says “for normal hair.” It doesn’t mean that you can ignore daily hair care for men; it just means your scalp isn’t an issue.
2. Oily
Guys with oily skin usually have problems with excess scalp oil. It can quickly build up during the day, leaving your locks looking limp and greasy. Find a shampoo that has oil control and volumizers.
3. Dry
You may be plagued with itchiness and dandruff if you have a dry scalp. You’re constantly nervous that you’ll have a few noticeable flakes on your shoulders. The good news is that you can find shampoos that nourish your scalp, stop the itch, and clear dandruff.
4. Heavy Product Build-up
Modern hair care for men goes further than it did in your dad’s or grandpa’s days. Now, you have the option of styling your mane with sprays, gels, mousses, and other styling products. The downside is that these products can build up on your hair and make it look unhealthy.
If you use many styling products, buy a shampoo formulated to deep clean your hair. It will usually say “clarifying,” which means it removes any product residue. Most of these shampoos can be safely used every day.
Choosing the Right Conditioner
Not only does your hair need the right shampoo, but it also needs to be adequately conditioned. We discuss the importance of hair conditioning with our clients having hair transplant surgery. Try to match your conditioner with the same hair type as your shampoo.
1. Daily Conditioner
Daily conditioner can be used every day after you shampoo. After you’ve rinsed away the lather, put a dab of conditioner on your fingers and work it from your hair roots to the ends. Let it stay in for a couple of minutes, then rinse with warm (not hot) water.
2. Leave-In Conditioner
When your locks need some extra attention, you can try a leave-in conditioner. After washing your hair, you use this product, and it’s barely damp. Gently massage the conditioner and let it stay in for all-day hair nourishment.
3. Deep Conditioner
If you’re having dryness and hair breakage problems, you may consider using a regular deep conditioner. You apply the product after washing your hair and leave it in for between 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse. It will nourish your hair from roots to ends, as well as condition your scalp.
