Follicular Unit Extraction
Follicular Unit Extraction is commonly referred to as FUE. During this process, a sterile surgical punch about one millimeter in diameter is used to extract Follicular Units (FU) from the donor area usually located in the back of the scalp known as the occipital area. In comparison, the Strip Method has been around for several decades. Both the Strip method and the FUE method ultimately produce grafts that are inserted in the same manner in the recipient (balding) area.
As with any surgical incision in the skin, the FUE method of harvesting grafts produces many tiny round scars, less than 1mm in diameter. The biggest advantage of the FUE procedure is that you can wear your hair very short (about a #2 clipper or longer) and still be able to camouflage the FUE harvesting scars. There are no sutures remove therefore the recovery time for the FUE procedure is much quicker.
MFU (Multiple Follicular Unit) grafts can only be obtained with the strip method. The FUE method moves/transplants less hair for each hair transplant session. The FUE method is a great option for those that need to wear their hair short or those that need smaller areas transplanted (hairlines or scars). When looking at clinics for an FUE procedure, it is important to ask if a physician will be performing the harvesting portion of your procedure. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery has written a position statement regarding this matter: “Non Physicians Performing FUE Procedures”. Dr. Zacco most noteworthy directly oversees all FUE procedures performed at AZ Hair Restoration. During FUE procedures, Dr. Zacco harvests all grafts.
